Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango has called for urgent police intervention following growing concerns over insecurity in Kagio, Kutus, Kerugoya and Ngurubani towns citing reported cases of mugging, theft, shop break-ins and coffee theft from farms.
In a letter dated October 28, 2026, addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Kirocho and received at the National Police Service headquarters on October 29, the Senator raised concerns over what he described as a deteriorating security situation across the county.
Murango said the reported incidents have left residents, traders, business owners and farmers worried about their safety and livelihoods.
He particularly highlighted the theft of coffee from farms noting that the crop remains an important source of income for many households in Kirinyaga. His concerns come amid reports of repeated coffee thefts in the area including a recent incident at a farm in Kagumo, Mutira Ward where two suspects were arrested at around 3:00am over alleged coffee theft. He said farmers should not continue losing their hard-earned produce to criminals.

The Senator also drew attention to a recent incident in Kerugoya in which an individual was reportedly killed and their body dumped in the town. He said the incident raised serious questions about public safety and the effectiveness of existing security measures.
Murango warned that continued criminal activities could affect not only the safety of residents but also businesses and agricultural activities that support the local economy.
He noted that Kagio, Kutus, Kerugoya and Ngurubani serve as important trading centres for residents and farmers from surrounding areas making security essential for their daily economic activities.
In his appeal, the Senator asked the Inspector General to immediately strengthen security operations in the four towns and surrounding areas to protect residents, businesses and farmers and also called for swift and thorough investigations into reported cases.
Among his other requests, Murango wants police to improve intelligence gathering and community policing to help identify criminal gangs and individuals involved in the reported activities.
He further asked the National Police Service to review police deployment in the affected towns and surrounding areas to ensure adequate security coverage.
The Senator also called for immediate preventive measures to restore public confidence and make the towns and surrounding agricultural areas safer for residents, traders, farmers and visitors.
Murango said the people of Kirinyaga deserve to live and conduct their businesses without fear of being attacked, robbed or mugged in their homes, shops or farms.
He urged the police leadership to treat the matter with urgency warning that residents expect concrete action rather than promises.
The appeal comes amid concerns over reported criminal incidents in different parts of Kirinyaga with coffee farmers, traders and other residents among those affected by insecurity.
