Thousands of former KCSE candidates whose certificates have remained in schools due to unpaid fee balances may now have a new way to access their academic documents after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) rolled out an online e-Certificate platform.
The new system allows candidates who sat the KCSE examination to access and download a digital copy of their certificate through KNEC's official portal after completing the required registration process and paying an access fee of KSh 1,300.
For years, many former students have been unable to collect their physical KCSE certificates because their former schools withheld them over outstanding school fees. The move is expected to ease the burden on thousands of candidates who need their certificates when applying for jobs, colleges, universities and other opportunities.
To access the service, candidates are required to register on KNEC's e-Certificate portal, verify their identity using personal details and pay the prescribed fee before downloading the digital certificate. The document can then be printed or shared electronically whenever needed.
However, KNEC has not stated that the e-Certificate replaces the original physical certificate in every situation. Candidates are advised to confirm with employers or institutions whether they accept the digital version where necessary.
The introduction of the online platform marks a major step in digitising examination services in Kenya and is expected to make certificate access faster, easier and more convenient for former candidates across the country.
